The Dry Off module is used to transition milking cows into their Dry Period before their next calving.

This period is critical for:
- Mammary gland recovery
- Optimizing future milk production
- Ensuring the health of both the mother and unborn calf

📋 Feature Overview #
This module streamlines the dry-off process and ensures proper lactation management by:
- Tracking Due Dates – Automatically flags cows that should be dried off (typically 60 days before calving).
- Status Management – Updates cow records from Milking → Dry.
- Lactation Closure – Automatically closes the current lactation record upon dry-off.
- Calving Preparation – Provides timelines for upcoming births to optimize nutrition and nesting conditions for dry cows.
🚀 How to Manage Dry Off Records #
1️⃣ Identifying Cows Due for Dry Off #
The dashboard prioritizes cows needing attention:
- Cows Due for Dry Off – Milking cows within 14 days of their recommended dry-off date.
- Overdue Alert – Marked with 🔴 Overdue badge for cows past dry-off date.
- Due Soon Alert – Marked with 🟡 Due Soon badge for cows approaching dry-off date (within 14 days).
2️⃣ Marking an Animal as Dry #
🎯 A. From the Due List (Recommended) #
- Click the Moon Icon next to the cow in Cows Due for Dry Off table.
- A modal displays:
- Animal ID
- Days in Milk (DIM)
- Select Dry Off Date (defaults to today).
- Enter Notes for observations.
- Click Confirm Dry Off.
✅ Fastest method to ensure accurate dry period tracking.
✍ B. Manual Entry #
- Use Add Animal to Dry Period form.
- Select Stall/Shed → Animal ID.
- Enter Dry Off Date.
- Click Submit.
Useful for recording past dry-offs or correcting missing data.
3️⃣ Monitoring Dry Cows #
- Recently Dried Off – Shows cows transitioned to dry period in last 30 days.
- Expected Calvings – Consolidated timeline of pregnant cows (dry and milking) showing days remaining until delivery.
4️⃣ Reversing Dry Status #
If a cow was mistakenly marked dry:
- Find the cow in Recently Dried Off table.
- Click the red X Icon.
- Status reverts to Milking and last lactation record is reopened.
💡 Best Practices #
- 60-Day Dry Period – Maintain ~60 days pre-calving to maximize next lactation yield.
- Record Body Condition – Use Notes to log Body Condition Score (BCS). Avoid over-conditioning.
- Health Checks During Dry-Off – Ideal time for:
- Hoof trimming
- Dry-cow therapy (mastitis prevention)
Record these in separate Health/Treatment modules.
- Shed Assignment – Move dry cows to dedicated Dry Cow shed via Animal Management module for proper diet and monitoring.
